ABOUT ME
Emily Hazlett / 2024
I am a music teacher at Pleasant Hills Middle School in the West Jefferson Hills School District near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I teach middle school choir and general music (piano and guitar). I began my teaching career teaching high school choir at Greensburg Salem in 2021, and I made the move to Pleasant Hills Middle in 2023. All of my incredible students make my job so wonderful.
I graduated from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, with honors, summa cum laude. I received multiple honors including Class of 2021 Highest Grade Point Average (4.0), Excellence in Music Education Award, and Award of Distinction for Honors Capstone Project. I also graduated as the Class of 2017 Valedictorian from West Middlesex Area High School where I received the John Philip Sousa Award for band students. I am now currently attending the University of Florida to receive my Master of Music in Music Education. I am pursuing this degree through their online program to allow me to continue teaching my students in Pleasant Hills while furthering my education. I am currently projected to graduate in May of 2024, and I am working on my master's thesis now. My master's thesis is a quantitative descriptive survey study of the criteria that middle school choral educators use to select repertoire for their choirs to perform. I am striving to understand how different groups of teachers may think differently on this topic, and I would love to get this work published to help other middle school choral educators better understand how themselves and their colleagues might view repertoire selection, a very important job of the music teacher. For my honors capstone project at Seton Hill, I completed a graduate course at Temple University to become certified in Level One Gordon Music Learning Theory for Early Childhood Music. Upon completion of this, I created a series of videos using this technique that were sent to over 30 early childhood teachers whose schools did not have music programs in order to help give children meaningful musical experiences. |
The fact that children can make beautiful music is less significant than the fact that music can make beautiful children." I am a vocalist, and I play the trumpet and piano, along with being proficient on a wide variety of instruments. I was a part of a variety of choral and instrumental ensembles, including the highest level ensembles while at Seton Hill.
I have had a life rich in music, and I want to help my future students experience a passion and love for music that will last throughout their lives. My objective is to provide future students with a well-rounded music education that allows for academic and personal growth. Students will learn information and skills such as singing, playing instruments, reading music, improvisation, and composition that will challenge and train them to develop a more agile and knowledgeable mind. Musicianship builds character through its demands of great effort, stamina, and reliability along with fostering love, passion, and understanding in students through the deep emotions that music evokes. Through traditional and nontraditional music experiences, students will develop skills to appreciate and participate in music for the rest of their lives. Music breathes passion and love through all students that study it, unmatched by any other school subject. It is my goal to cultivate my future students’ intellect, character, and overall person through the learning and loving of music.
