Miss Hazlett's Music Room Music Lesson Playlist This YouTube playlist is my final project for my honors capstone project. This playlist was given to many early childhood care centers and educational centers, including many Head Start programs to give lower-income students opportunities to receive this education as well. I presented my research and project to the Honors Council and university professors on May 7th, 2021. I hope to spread this project and my knowledge to as many students as possible! Please continue reading below to read more about how I conducted my research project.

Gordon MLT Early Childhood Level One Certification:
2-Week Graduate Course at Temple University - Philadelphia, PA
July of 2019, I spent two weeks at Temple University in Philadelphia taking a graduate level course on early childhood music education in the Gordon Music Learning Theory (MLT) methodology. I was trained by professors and instructors who learned from Dr. Edwin Gordon himself including current leader in MLT Dr. Beth Bolton. This technique is based on the idea that children should learn music in an organic and natural way, similar to the way that language is learned as a baby (listening and experiencing, speaking, reading, then writing).
I spent full and intense days learning theory, experiencing the methodology, learning pedagogy, and teaching using the methodology. We had the opportunity to create lessons and teach those to early childhood classes in downtown Philadelphia. These classes held children of a variety of ages from newborn babies to kindergarteners. Based on this education and experience, I am able to confidently use Gordon MLT in my curriculum, lessons, and teaching which has helped me to become a stronger music educator. |
Educational Outreach:
Giving Opportunities for Early Childhood Music Education
Using my education and experience from the Early Childhood MLT graduate course, I created a YouTube series for early childhood teachers to use with their students to teach music. These videos do not require the teacher to have any musical knowledge, but the students will be learning core principles of early childhood music through participating in the videos. These videos were sent to over 30 teachers in the local area, none of whom had music programs, and some of whom taught underprivileged populations. Though these videos, I was still able to use the core principles of Gordon's Music Learning Theory to create and teach engaging and meaningful lessons for many students that also allowed them to have lots of fun with experiencing music! This experience was incredibly rewarding, and I am so happy that these children now get to experience meaningful music in their educations.
